Describing this season has at times been hard,
So many moments you can’t discard,
And it came to a head on the final day,
As the Premier League produced a great display,
In the race for Europe Arsenal come third,
Whilst Spurs’s hopes are somewhat blurred,
In the fight for survival, Rangers escape,
Bolton can’t reach the finishing tape,
Now to the title where we must explain,
The moments which ended City’s pain,
Pressure applied by United’s early goal,
Nerves in the blue half take control,
But Zabaleta scores! The Etihad explodes,
As Ferguson’s hope steadily erodes,
Then came what was hard to foresee,
With QPR producing two moments of glee,
Surely City weren’t going to choke,
Had they come so far only to croak!?
Injury time, Mancini’s men doomed?
Second by second, United’s taunts loomed,
But then a goal from Dzeko changes it all,
One goal needed to rule them all,
And minutes later the strike arrives,
Aguero nets as the Etihad jives,
Soon after the whistle is sounded,
At a faster rate City hearts pounded,
Champions of the most entertaining campaign,
Whilst United sit second, Manchester City reign!
Player of the Weekend
Usually this is reserved for overall performance throughout a game. Sunday’s match at the Etihad was no ordinary game though as Manchester City came from behind to clinch the title in injury time, or as City fans call it ‘Fergie Time.’ Whilst Sergio Aguero may have been largely anonymous against QPR, he made an impact when it mattered most.
The Argentinian scored with less than two minutes remaining in the season to win the title for Manchester City. Aguero was already a very popular figure prior to this goal but it will earn him legendary status at the club after securing the blue half of Manchester their first top flight championship in 44 years. Prepare to see that goal over and over again in the next few days, months and years. It’s one those in sky blue will never get tired of seeing.
Goal of the Weekend
Let’s step away from the Etihad and move 28 miles to the west to Wigan where full-back Emerson Boyce is acquiring a taste for spectacular strikes. Just a few weeks ago, he scored with a low effort against Fulham from just outside the box. His strike on Sunday topped that though.
Facing an already relegated Wolves side, Boyce showed great technique in hitting a half volley first time from the edge of the area. Into the near corner, the ball flew meaning Boyce collected his second goal of the game. It also was the goal that clinched victory for Wigan who ended up finishing two points behind Sunderland – now there’s something you didn’t envision in February!
Controversy of the Weekend
Bolton manager Owen Coyle was understandably unhappy at the officials’ performance in the aftermath of his side’s draw at Stoke after two contentious decisions. Most controversially, referee Chris Foy allowed Jon Walters goal when the striker barged Adam Bogdan despite the keeper having two hands on the ball.
However, the reason for Bolton’s relegation was not down to refereeing decisions – it was down to bad performance throughout the season. Over 38 games, the Trotters have been very poor albeit they have been hamstrung by injuries. Still, you’ll be fortunate to survive winning only four home games and in the end Bolton just weren’t good enough.
Quote of the Weekend
On the final weekend of the Premier League, there were quite a few comments which caught the eye. Joe Hart for example joked he was thinking of taking up cricket as Manchester City looked to have blown their title chance in the second half.
The best quote though was not so much a coherent phrase but the reaction of Paul Merson to City’s late winner. After all, it accurately summed up the thoughts of any neutral on what was a remarkable day for football…
