Mathieu Debuchy has revealed that he’s disappointed to have seen a potential loan move to Manchester United fail to get over the line during the last transfer window and that he’s annoyed with Arsene Wenger’s reluctance to hand him game time with Arsenal this season.
The France international joined Ligue 1 side Bordeaux for the remainder of the season shortly before the close of the transfer deadline just gone after a frustrating few months in the north of London.
Debuchy had featured just seven times in all competitions during the opening half of the campaign, with Spanish youngster Hector Bellerin having played himself into Wenger’s plans.
A move to Aston Villa for the remainder of the campaign was largely mooted, but Man United came in with a dramatic late loan offer for the 30-year-old, which was rebuffed by the Gunners, who, naturally, were reluctant to strengthen a major rival.
And Debuchy has claimed that he’s “disappointed” to have seen the potential deal vetoed:
“Yes, at the end of the transfer window they [Manchester United] came in,” he told Canal+ (via ESPN).
“They contacted my agents. I was disappointed, obviously. If I had a chance to go to Manchester United it would have been magnificent.
“Unfortunately it wasn’t the case. I discussed it with the coach too, who said that he couldn’t help out a rival.”
Debuchy went on to hit out at Wenger for not handing him game time at the Emirates Stadium:
“Yes, I’m a little bit annoyed by him. It’s his choice. I came back well this summer, I had a good pre-season.
“I was able to talk to him to know my future at Arsenal. He said that I would have game time and that we would discuss it in December. Unfortunately, I didn’t have this game time.”
