With Euro 2012 slowly creeping around the corner speculation over who Stuart Pearce (or whichever poor soul is foolish enough to take the job) will include in his squad for Championships is rife.
For the players vying for a seat on the plane it’s time to step up their game and show the man affectionally known as Psycho that they are worthy of pulling on the coveted Three Lions jersey in Poland and Ukraine this summer. That urgent wait for a phone call, text, email or confirmation from a Sky Sports News breaking news bonanza complete with exploding Jim White gets under way after the final whistle brings the curtain down on the Premier League season.
With Fabio Capello ousted from the dugout and the diplomatic Pearce likely to lead England into the Euros every player eligible for selection has a clean slate. With a majority of the reputed ‘Golden Generation’ ageing, under performing and slowly being phased out of the national side there is scope for new blood to be introduced to the squad.
Whilst the likes of Steven Gerrard and John Terry are still key figures in the dressing room their time as international footballers is rapidly running out. England’s current transitional period and managerial change opens the door for individuals who would never have dreamed of being selected for their country. There are players plying their trade in the top flight who’s performances are currently outstripping the usual Three Lion’s suspects. Individuals who fully deserve a crack of the international football whip as recognition of their talent and effort.
For the next couple of months supporters the length and breadth of the country will be debating who should make the England squad for Euro 2012.
